Forest Project Funds Grant 2006

Final Report

During the grant period (May 2006 through June 2007), the Stewards maintained three major areas (about 3,300 acres in the Cottonwood, Clarkdale and Cornville areas) already cleaned up and expanded to four new areas in the Camp Verde and Beaver Creek areas. Thirteen cleanup projects involved about 1,700 volunteer hours, conservatively valued at $24,000. A major part of the work involved situations where vehicles or trash were already burned or where fire hazards were present. Volunteers did field reconnaissance, determined equipment needs, planned logistics, engaged partners, and worked with public agencies. Successes were publicized; and enforcement was increased. Grant funds totaling $3,750 helped defray costs of trucks, loaders, dumpsters, dump fees, signs and supplies, particularly when donated equipment and supplies did not suffice. Because more heavy equipment was donated than anticipated and a potential conference did not take place, remaining funds were used to stock up on needed cleanup tools and supplies.

Forest Project Funds Grant 2007

Project Name: Stewards of Public Lands Law Enforcement Support Project

Sponsors: Cocopai Resource Conservation and Development, Inc., as Grant Administrator in partnership with Stewards of Public Lands and Verde Valley Cities and Towns’ Law Enforcement Agencies (Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Jerome and Sedona).

Objective: Application is for Forest Project Funds grant of $5,000 divided among the five incorporated Cities and Towns of the Verde Valley, for incentive money to heighten awareness of the consequences of illegal dumping, increase the chances of perpetrators getting caught, reduce watershed and fire hazards, and publicize results. The strategic goal of the Stewards project is to improve public land ethics and foster behavioral change through partnerships, cleanup projects, publicity, monitoring, compliance, enforcement and education. This proposal applies to one major objective, which is to decrease risks to people and property from wildfires. To do so, Stewards will support Law Enforcement agencies with financial assistance for monitoring, educating, and/or enforcing against illegal dumping, fuel for patrolling, publicity against dumping, and/or educational materials for distribution. The Stewards will also continue to clean up public lands, including forest fuels, hazardous materials, bonfire debris, abandoned and burned vehicles, and illegal camp sites. By publicizing successes and working with Law Enforcement officials to stop dumping, Stewards educate the public about responsible use of National Forests and other public lands. Specific objectives of this proposal are to:

• Protect people and property from wildfire

• Support local Law Enforcement agencies in their efforts to prevent fire disasters like the Brins and La Barranca Fires

• Help enforce laws relating to litter, dumping and illegal occupancy

• Monitor and maintain cleaned areas

• Educate the community

Problem: Illegal uses of public lands as dumping grounds increase the risk of wildfire and threaten people and property.

Action: Set an example—help prevent wildfires by supporting local Law Enforcement agencies, cleaning up public lands, keeping them clean, enforcing the law.

Budget/Funding: $5,000 ($1,000 each for Cities and Towns of Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Jerome, and Sedona.)

What type of Assistance are you requesting from the Cocopai Council: Co-sponsorship of grant application and management of funds.
